Day 1Arrival, Pick Up Your Car and Explore the City

Welcome to the stunning landscapes of New Zealand!

Upon arrival at Christchurch airport, pick up your rental car and head to your accommodation.

After settling in, explore Christchurch's city center aboard the historic tram. Experience a mix of old and new, and consider dining in the tram's stylish restaurant wagon.

Alternatively, take the modern Gondola cable car up Mount Cavendish for stunning views of the Southern Alps and Christchurch.

Visit the Canterbury Museum to learn about the area's history, then enjoy an evening at Willowbank Scenic Reserve. Take a guided tour to see kiwis in their natural habitat or attend a Maori Show with a traditional Powhiri welcome.

Day 2Christchurch - Lake Tekapo

Today's journey begins with a scenic drive from Lake Tekapo to Meo Vac, offering ample opportunities to appreciate the stunning landscapes and enjoy breaks for refreshments.

Upon arrival in Meo Vac, you'll be welcomed to a charming traditional Hmong dwelling for an authentic overnight experience. With its distinctive clay walls and rich character, it promises a memorable stay.

Day 3Lake Tekapo - Queenstown

Today, we're heading south in New Zealand, soaking in the stunning sights along the way. We'll drive past the picturesque Pukaki Lake and the unique rock formations of Omarama. Then, we'll traverse the Lindis Pass, offering panoramic views of McKenzie Basin's rugged beauty.

Before reaching Queenstown, we'll stop by the charming former gold mining town of Arrowtown. Finally, we'll arrive in Queenstown, nestled between towering mountains and the serene Lake Wakatipu, ready to explore its natural wonders and vibrant culture.

Day 4Queenstown Discovery

Today is yours to explore Queenstown, often hailed as the adventure capital of the world!

One exciting option is to hop aboard the historic steamboat "TSS Earnslaw" for a scenic cruise across the shimmering waters of Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station. Here, you can embark on a fascinating farm tour or ride the gondola up to the Queenstown skyline. From this lofty perch, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the majestic mountains that surround you.

For those seeking a more adventurous experience, consider joining a thrilling jeep tour led by an experienced SUV driver. You'll venture into the rugged terrain of Skipper Canyon, where you'll discover the rich history of gold-digging in the area. Additionally, there are tours available that will transport you to the enchanting filming locations of the legendary Lord of the Rings series.

Day 5Queenstown - Te Anau

Today, we're heading to Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland National Park, New Zealand's largest and most pristine wilderness area.

In Te Anau, you can visit the Bird Sanctuary to see rare native birds or explore the stunning Te Anau Glowworm Caves. These caves offer a mesmerizing underground world with sculpted rock formations, whirlpools, and a breathtaking display of glowworms illuminating the darkness.

Day 6Te Anau - Wanaka

Let's keep going and drive through the stunning Kawarau Gorge, home to the world's first commercial Bungy Jump. Afterward, we'll reach Wanaka, a peaceful town nestled by a former glacier lake, surrounded by Mt. Aspiring's majestic wilderness. Wanaka offers a serene escape from the bustling city, with plenty of hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels.

Day 7Wanaka - Franz Josef

Today, we'll journey through the majestic Aspiring National Park and cross the Haast Pass into the captivating Westland National Park. Along the west coast, we'll drive through lush rainforests to reach the glacier region of the Southern Alps. Here, the Fox Glacier and the Franz Josef Glacier, both unique to temperate latitudes, await, towering at 300 meters above sea level. We'll spend the night in Franz Josef, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Southern Alps.

Day 8Franz Josef - Hokitika

Today's journey takes us along the scenic west coast, passing by historic gold mining towns like Hari Hari and Ross. You'll have the chance to explore old gold mines and learn about the region's rich history.

Next, we'll visit Hokitika, known for its jade craftsmanship. Take a tour of a jade factory to watch artisans at work and purchase unique jewelry made from this precious stone. Hokitika's charming seaside setting offers opportunities for beach walks and visits to the local aquarium and kiwi house.

Day 9Hokitika - Kaikoura

Today, we'll drive across the South Island from the west to the east coast, passing through Greymouth and historic gold prospecting areas. Then, we'll journey through tranquil forests and cross the alpine Lewis Pass before reaching the west coast.

Our final stop is Kaikoura, famous for its whale-watching tours. Keep an eye out for sperm whales and playful dolphins, and you might even spot fur seals along the way.

Day 10Kaikoura - Marlborough Sounds

Today, we're heading north along the picturesque east coast, passing through Blenheim in the Marlborough Plain. Did you know that viticulture in this region started back in the 1970s, when Montana Wines was searching for new land? The unique combination of soil composition, abundant sunshine, long autumn days, and cold winters creates perfect conditions for premium wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc.

Our journey ends in Picton, where we'll park our rental car before boarding a boat transfer to our tranquil accommodation nestled in the Marlborough Sounds. Situated right on the water, you'll find yourself immersed in a world free from roads and everyday noise, offering a serene atmosphere for pure relaxation. As the day winds down, enjoy a delicious dinner in this idyllic setting.

Day 11Marlborough Sounds - Wellington

Today, a water taxi will pick you up from your accommodation and take you back to Picton. From there, we'll journey across Cook Strait aboard the Interislander ferry, arriving in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand since 1865.

In this charming capital city, you'll have the chance to delve into New Zealand's rich history and culture at the Te Papa National Museum. For stunning views of the city, hop on a cable car up to the botanical garden. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Weta Workshop or Peter Jackson Workshop, where movie magic from films like The Hobbit and Narnia comes to life.

In the evening, join a leisurely walk through Zealandia with a local guide. Here, you'll have the chance to spot various animals, including the elusive Kiwi bird, which only emerges at night.

Day 12Wellington - Lake Taupo

As we drive along the Kapiti Coast and through the lush farmland of Manawatu to the north, we'll soon arrive at the edge of Tongariro National Park. This iconic park is steeped in Maori legends and boasts three stunning volcanoes, surrounded by a landscape of black ash, dusty deserts, and mountain streams lined with native beech trees. It's no wonder this area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991! Fun fact: scenes from The Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed right here in Tongariro National Park.

Continuing our journey a little further north, we'll reach today's destination - Lake Taupo.

Day 13Lake Taupo - Rotorua

Today, you will drive to Rotorua to admire its exotic Maori culture and rich geothermal resource, including geysers, steaming lakes and rivers, bubbling mud holes, and multicolored hot springs.

In the evening we recommend a visit to a Maori village with participation in a marae (traditional Maori meeting place). Here you will be greeted with a traditional challenge at the gate of the Marae and then experience Maori rituals. After the concert in the Meeting House, you are invited to the "Hangi", an earth oven meal with food cooked on glowing stones.

Today is your day to explore at your own pace.

Day 15Rotorua - Hahei

Let's head north to the Coromandel Peninsula in Hahei! Along the way, we'll drive past Kiwi plantations and through Katikati, known for its avocado farms and vibrant murals adorning the walls. If you fancy, we can make a quick stop in Tauranga before continuing on.

In Matamata, you'll have the chance to take a 2-hour tour of the famous film set of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, also known as the "Shire." Get ready to explore the Hobbit Caves, visit "The Green Dragon Inn," and discover other iconic highlights from the movies.

Afterward, we'll journey to the Coromandel Peninsula, where you'll discover a landscape of stunning contrasts - from white sandy beaches to lush green farmland, and rugged cliffs to gentle mountain ranges covered in dense jungle. Don't miss the chance to visit the Hot Water Beaches, where you can dig your own natural spa pool in the sand and relax in the warm water. Afterward, cool off with a refreshing dip in the sea.

Today, you get to choose your own adventure! You can explore Cathedral Cove, a breathtaking location featured in the film "The Chronicles of Narnia," by boat, kayak, or on foot.

Alternatively, you can hop aboard New Zealand's only narrow-gauge railway. This scenic ride will take you over viaducts and through tunnels, offering stunning views of the landscape. The winding journey covers about 2.7 km through lush primary forest, leading you to a "railway station" high up on the mountain, where you'll be treated to fantastic views of the Coromandel Peninsula.

Today you can join a guided walk along the Coastal Walkway, covering a round trip of 20 km over 7 hours. This adventure allows you to discover the remote northern part of the Coromandel Peninsula, offering spectacular sea views along the way.

As you journey towards the northern bays, you'll be greeted by the majestic sight of Mount Moehau towering above vast Pohutukawa trees. And on your return, you'll have the chance to witness breathtaking sunsets over the Gulf of Hauraki, adding a magical touch to your day.

Day 18Hahei - Auckland

Let's keep the adventure going as we head into Auckland, known as the City of Sails, with its stunning setting around two large harbors.

Once in the city, we'll take you to the Sky City Tower, standing tall at 328 meters. From here, you'll be treated to unparalleled views of Auckland and its surroundings. For those feeling brave, you can even test your courage on the Skywalk, where you'll stand on a glass floor high above the city.
